Season 4 of ‘Cobra Kai’ Is Already In The Works

  • Ahead of the January release of Cobra Kai Season 3, Netflix has already renewed the show for Season 4.
  • A new teaser for the third season officially confirmed the news, saying Season 4 was “In Training.”
  • Here’s everything we know about the show’s upcoming fourth season.

In the Karate Kid franchise, a phrase we hear often is “Cobra Kai Never Die.” And it seems like Cobra Kai, the 34-years-later sequel series that was already a hit on YouTube Premium and has become and even more massive hit since landing on Netflix this past summer, has adapted that same mentality. Netflix announced today that the show, starring original franchise stars Ralph Macchio and William Zabka, has been renewed for a Season 4 before Season 3 even debuted.

The announcement, which says that a Season 4 of Cobra Kai is “in training,” comes at the end of a promotional video for Season 3 of Cobra Kai, revealing that season’s release date for the first time, when we had previously only heard “early 2021.” The third season of the action dramedy series will debut on January 8, 2021.

Co-creator Jon Hurwitz has frequently mentioned the progress being made on Cobra Kai Season 4.

One of the best things about Cobra Kai is that creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald are all incredibly active, transparent, and conversational with fans on Twitter. That means when they know something, chances are, we’ll know something too. It also means sometimes we won’t have as much clarity as we want, but hey, what are you going to do.

In the case of Cobra Kai’s Season 4, we don’t know a whole lot. Hurwitz did share in late October that the Season 4 writing process was all wrapped up, though. “Final day of the Season 4 writers room,” he wrote. “14 weeks with some of my favorite people in the world. Scripts are rolling in. Excited we’ll have everything written and polished by the time we start filming. It’s going to be another kick ass season!”

He’s also said that the season is “outlined in great detail”.

One important note? While it’s not set in stone—and nothing in the COVID-19 era really can be—it sounds like there are tentative plans for Season 4 to begin filming and production in early 2021. “Planning for early 2021,” Hurwitz said in a Tweet asking for a potential timeline. “Most productions have been overwhelmingly safe. But we’ll see how things are looking after the New Year. Hopefully we can get the numbers under control.”

When will Cobra Kai Season 4 be released?

No release date has been revealed yet, but given that Season 3 will be out on January 8, 2021, we’d have to guess that Season 4 will be about a year after that. Hurwitz seemed to be thinking the same thing when a fan asked him on Twitter recently.

“I don’t have the answer, but would imagine Season 4 will come out roughly a year after Season 3,” he wrote.

It’s also possible that the show could return to its previous spring release schedule. Keep in mind, Season 3 of the show was originally filmed and planned to be release on YouTube, but they moved away from scripted television (allowing Netflix to claim the show for themselves). So when the first two seasons were released in spring of 2018 and 2019, 2020 didn’t have the same luxury.

So, long story short, we’d guess that Season 4 will likely come in either January or April of 2022. Luckily for Cobra Kai fans, it seems like the worst of the COVID-19-induced production delays are behind us; with health protocols such as frequent testing, social distancing, and mask-wearing in place, most films and television shows seem to have resumed production.

What will Season 4 be about?

Another good question. Until we see Season 3—only a few weeks away!—its hard to even really make a guess. But we do have a tweet from co-creator Jon Hurwitz to go off of, and it sounds like we’re going to once again have quite the cliffhanger.

“I cannot wait for you to see the Cobra Kai Season 3 finale,” he wrote. “But I especially can’t wait for you to see the last 90 seconds. People are gonna go nuts. I know I do every time.”

High words, considering the epic high school brawl we saw in Season 3. But sounds like the show is setting up to top even itself.

Who will be in the Cobra Kai Season 4 cast?

We’re going to have to see how Season 3 plays out, but Cobra Kai isn’t Cobra Kai without its two main characters, Johnny Lawrence (Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Macchio). Also vital to the series are Miguel (Xolo Maridueña), Daniel’s daughter, Samantha, (Mary Mouser), wife, Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) and Johnny’s son, Robby Kreese (Tanner Buchanan). Hawk (Jacob Bertrand) is also essential to the show, but his character is so teetering off the rails that it wouldn’t be shocking if he went full villain in Season 3 and that turned out to be his last season. Same thing for another classic film character, Sensei John Kreese (Martin Kove), who made a major play at the end of Season 2 and will surely be a huge part of Season 3. This is all pure speculation, though.
