Saturday night’s alright for fighting, but Elton John is prepared to throw hands on Sunday evening as well if need be.
Ahead of the Grammys, Sir Elton chatted with singer-songwriter and Friend of the Brand Phoebe Bridgers on his Rocket Hour radio show on Apple Music. Bridgers is nominated for four awards and apparently John will be rooting for the smasher-of-guitars, telling her toward the end of the show, “If you don’t win at least one, I’m going to hit someone, OK?”
Bridgers’ Punisher was one of the most celebrated albums of 2020 and is nominated for Best Alternative Album alongside records by Fiona Apple, Brittany Howard, Beck, and Tame Impala. One of the singles from that album, “Kyoto,” is up for both Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance (for the latter, it’s the first time in history the Grammys nominated a female-only slate in a rock category). Plus, Bridgers is one of eight musicians nominated for Best New Artist.
“Your album is like an old friend,” John said. “It’s like a Tapestry. I have records in my life that are reference points and I think Punisher‘s one of those reference points. I can’t pay you a bigger compliment than that.”
Beyond the Grammys, John and Bridgers talked about creativity in quarantine and their shared love for Billie Eilish. “I’m obsessed with Billie,” Bridgers said. “I think she’s a genius.”
John and Bridgers’ full conversation will air Saturday at 12 p.m. ET and be available to stream on-demand at Apple Music 1.
You can watch the 63rd Annual GRAMMY Awards, hosted by Trevor Noah, on CBS at 8 p.m. ET on March 14.
