The premise of Justin Bieber’s new music video, for his latest single “Ghost,” is pretty straightforward. It’s moving, even: Bieber plays a grandson caring for his grieving grandmother, following the death of his grandfather. But the way the video actually plays out—starting with the fact that his grandmother is played by none other than Diane Keaton—is where things get pretty wacky. It’s like a sweet, if hallucinatory, Nancy Meyers movie, only instead of sick kitchens there are incredible outfits.
Bieber stands on a beach, in a Saint Laurent suit. In a flashback, Bieber spends time with both of his grandparents, he in a vintage striped rugby and Balenciaga jeans, Keaton in her own Comme des Garçons coat. Years after the funeral, Bieber, wearing his signature pearls, cheers Keaton up with armfuls of Gucci, which she wears while they take shots and dance together at a candlelit bar before returning home, where Bieber supervises Keaton swiping on a dating app over a cheese plate and glasses of red wine. Together, they drive to Ventura Beach in a vintage Corvette to throw his grandfather’s ashes into the sea. Suffice to say: she’s in a Gucci coat, and he’s in a cocoa Aimé Leon Dore leather jacket.
Definitely not what you’d expect when we say “fashion-heavy music video,” but it only makes sense that a music video starring Keaton and Bieber, both style mavens in their own right, would earn its own Vogue writeup, outfit breakdown included. Keaton gets to wear all of her favorite things—wide-brimmed hats, tinted glasses, big ol’ belts—which makes sense, because apparently she brought most of her own clothes to set. (She is also, apparently, a longtime Belieber: “I like that boy,” she said during an Ellen appearance in 2015, minutes before the real-life Bieber popped out to surprise her, in standard Ellen fashion.) Bieber, meanwhile, gets his Balenciaga moment. We shed a tear or two. What’s not to like?
